What tax-ready actually means for a contractor
· 4 min
"Tax-ready" gets used loosely. In practice it means three concrete things: every expense has a category your accountant recognizes, tax is separated from the net amount, and each line is attached to a job.
Categories should come from your existing chart of accounts, not from a vendor's default list. Otherwise someone re-maps 400 rows every spring.
Ambiguous purchases will always exist — a hardware-store run covering two jobs, for example. Those should surface as a single question in chat on the day of purchase, while the answer is still obvious.
Done this way, year-end preparation stops being an archaeology project and becomes an export.
